a M e n d r e r I e
is a typical hamlet situated in THE PARC NATUREL REGIONAL DU HAUT LANGUEDOC
(Midi), West of Montpellier, about 60 kms. from BEZIER, and 1 ½
hours from the Méditerrannée.
The Vallée de l’Orb, in the HERAULT region, is famous for
its foods, its wines and its authenticity. The beautiful Orb river goes
through a variety of landscapes, fauna and flora. Within half an hour,
it can range from peaceful greenery, wild rock formations sculped by
erosion, red earth mountains, lakes and unusual scenery dotted with
typical capitelles(dry stone huts), garrigue, picturesque Middle-Age
villages with ancient bridges, where the inhabitants might invite you
for a glass of pastis in their Occitan language !
A stone’s-throw away, you can enjoy Herault’s rich historical past and ancestral culture (Megalitic tombs, Pre-Roman menhirs, caves), legendary castles and visit masterpieces of religious art and relics of the Romanesque period.

MENDRERIE B & B and GITE :
An 1850 stone country house in a small hamlet, about 10 minutes’ drive from AVENE LES BAINS, spa town, lake and monastry. The old exposed beams give it a ‘cottage’ feel. It has been tastefully renovated with a large bathroom, a special ‘jet’ shower and a large oak kitchen (click on photos).
The second building contains the original bread-oven, now used as a barbeque, and small the ecologically-built gite.
It is a ‘studio-size’ self-catering accommodation ), previously the old chestnut dryer, fully-equipped, renovated with non-toxic insulation materials like hemp and cork, local wood chestnut beams, limestone etc. ., fitted with solar panels, recycling systems, a wood stove and an ‘organic toilet’ in a separate building overlooking the pond (click on ‘descriptif’ and then diaporama).
Both buildings are surrounded by the garden with fig, cherry and hazelnut
trees, a mimosa, wisteria, passion fruit, butterflies trees, cactuses
and… the fish pond with waterlilies.Total peace and quiet, clean
air, silent and starry nights ….. listening to the crickets.
It is the ideal place for nature lovers, walkers, cyclists, or people who want to simply relax and be by themselves. One can sit for hours on the Terrasse Cevenole, which is faces the mountains and enjoys the sun until December…. with a glass of local wine ?
LEISURE AND SPORTS :
Golf, tennis, swimming, fishing, rafting, donkey or lamas rides, caves exploration etc..
Regional foods, wine-tasting festivals,
theatres and open air concerts in medieval surroundings are all at about
10/20 minutes.’ drive.
The nearby ‘peace seeking’ community of l’ Arche (Quakers),
producing butter and cheese, the wood-oven organic bakery of Fonbine,
the goats’ and sheep farms, and friendly locals (not to mention
the welcoming bilingual owner…with her home-made jams….
yam, yam !) make it a place where it is good to stay. It is still unspoiled
(not on most maps) and one can only hope that no-one will write another
book titled : ‘one year in Languedoc’ !
